The semester is almost over, I have to say that during this semester I have learned much more than last semester. I chose some hard courses this semester, such as macroeconomics, biology, and this writing class. Writing in English is always difficult for foreign students who come to the United States to study. I used to be afraid of writing stuff in English, but now I am kind of falling in love of writing. As you and myself can see through my blog that I have made improvements in writing skills during the semester. I have learned RAIDS, and it's so useful when I am thinking about how to start or how to arrange an article. Also, I have learned how to research. Doing research is boring, but when we are doing research, we could really learn something. Usually we do research for the paper, but if we spend time on it and look for different ways to research, it would be fun and we can learn a lot about the stuff we are searching for. In addition, we were put into groups when we did the remix project. Our group took a video about the international students' life in the United States. Although none of us knew how to take a video, we worked together and figured out. Finally a great short video was made. I think group study is better than individual study. We could learn together and figure out the problems more efficiently. As for the blog, I haven't heard any other professor let the students write blogs as one of the project. Although we have to blog twice a week, it's a bit fussy, we did improve our writing skills by blogging. I think it's especially a great way for international students to improve their English. During the process of writing blogs every week, I also got much knowledge about my field.
Besides WRA, my other classes went well too. The hospitality business class is fun, and I am so happy that I finally got what I am really interested in. I think I would keep working hard in my field and other classes. I hope I could end this semester strongly.

Reflecting and Researching
How time flies! I can't believe that a semester is almost over, and I have kept blogging for several months. By reading over all of the blogs that I posted, I found that I really learned a lot and my writing skill has improvded because of writing blogs twice a week.
Since it's a blog about my field, I found myself now understanding my major better. The top three things that I have learned about my field are that I know what hospitality management is, I used to think that only someone who wants to be a hotel manager would study hospitality maagement, but after researching, I know what this major really is. Also, I have got some experience of working in a hotel, and I wrote down my feelings in the blog. In addition, I learned many professional vocabularies about my field. I think I would use them one day when I really work in a hotel.
As I researching for information about my field, my researching ability is improving too. I used to think that using the internet is the only way that I could research, but I found I'm wrong now. In the blog, I have used many ways of researching, such as books, news, internet, and interview of others. This is the most important thing I have learned as a researcher. What's more, I know how to make citations in a sentence, and at the end of the articles. I wasn't used to making citations even I used other people's views, but now I know I was wrong and quotation is very important for me and also others. It shows the respect to the author of the sentence, and it's very necessary to tell readers were I got these opinions. I have also learned how to sum up others' opinions, and add my own thoughts into the article. I learned that since I am doing this a lot when I was writing a blog, it's very useful to combine my own opinion to others and create some new ideas.
The question I still have about my field is that I still can't get the whole process of recruiting and employing new staff for a hotel, and I wonder if everyone who major in hospitality would start their job at basic level.

Private Clubs
Last week, I have learned something about private clubs in my hospitality management class. In China, what private club means to me is where only rich people can get in. However, I have learned there are many kinds of private clubs actually. For example, there are city clubs, country clubs, equity clubs, and yacht clubs. Every club has its own rules and requirements for joing in the club.
After joing in these private clubs, people would get profit in some ways. Just as the members of some famous brands, you would know when the private sale is and get some cheaper stuff than others.I think the private clubs in the Unite States are better than those in China. In chinese, many peopl join some private clubs in order to show off in front of others. They think it's a symbol of richness. However, in the United States, most of the people join in the private clubs since they have similar interests, and they could communicate about their interests more if they are together in one club. Although many of them are rich, they don't join the club for showing off.
As learning about the knowledge about hospitality management, I also learned the differences between China and US. It's cultural difference and also humane diffeence. I think courses are always have something to do with one coutry's cultures.

Practicing Your knowledge
As talking about hands-on experience, I think recently the only hands-on experience I went through is Last Staurday at Kellogg Hotel & Conference Center. The experience was offered by my HB class. If we go to the hotel and serve others, we could get 10 extra credit for our class.
I went to the Kellogg Hotel on Friday at first, the teacher gave us a speech and briefly trained us what we should do the next day. It takes only about 20 minutes, and I thought it was easy. On Saturday, I went there at 3:00pm, and almose everyone was there. The professor gave us suits to change on, and gave each one a name card with one's name on it. I think it's formal and fun. After we have dinner together, we started to be the servers of the dining room. We need to stand by and if guests need us, we need to do the things that they asked us to do, such as refill the drinks and bring napkins to them. At about 9:00pm, everything was done and I went home. Although it's only about 3 hours, I am exhausted.
I once thought that majoring in hospitality management was easy since the only thing I need to do is to ask other servers to do stuff. However, after this experience, I realized that when we firstly got internship, we would start with the most basic job such as waiters. It's different than what I thought before, but I have to admit it's fun to do something I am interested in.
Compare to learning from written or spoken sources, hands-on learning is more vivid and more fun. When we read books or watch videos about our majors, we could know what it is and how it is like. However, when we experience it, we would know what we should do and how to deal with the actual problems. Learning from written sources is more boring than experiencing something is related to your major, you could never learn the real skill unless you actually do it. This hands-on learning expeience gave me many new ideas about my field, I have done something to satisfy the guests that I never did before. I would continue to look for the internship in a hotel during this summer vacation. I think it's really interesting to do some hands-on learning in your field.

Hotel Experiencers
Recently, a job "hotel experiencers" is very popular. The hotel experiencers would go to some luxury or five-star hotels to experience. The work they need to do is observe everything in the hotel, and check the price of it to see if it is suitable. Also, they need to stay there for one or two nights to judge the services in that hotel. The experiencers also need to go out of the hotel to see the convenience of the establishment nearby.
Almost eveyone thinks it's a great job. Who doesn't want to stay in a luxury hotel for free and also get money? However, by researching for this job, I found it's not easy to be a hotel experiencer. The experiencer needs to be trained at first, and if you want to be a hotel experiencer, you should know every brand of the stuff that the hotel uses. In addition, you should judge the hotel by every detail you see and feel. After leaving the hotel , the experiencer should write a report of the hotel you just stayed, and give guests some advice about whether to choose this hotel when they are travelling. The hotel experiencers seems easy, but it needs patience and the an inventive mind. Some of the hotel experiencers think it's a very tiring job too, they feel like they are always "on the way", and don't know when can go back to their own homes.
In my opinion, as the times progress, people require more about living and eating. There are also many appraisers go to restaurant to taste the food, and make judgement of the restaurant. The quality of the life is improving very fast, these burgroning jobs would be more and more popular. The person with these kinds of abilities would be a shortage.

Remixing Knowledge
I have found a website which is created by some professionals in my field. The website is called Hotel Management.Net. The link is http://www.hotelmanagement.net/.
I read some of the articles in that website and I found the website is very useful. By using RAIDS, I found that the revision of the website is that it combines news, blogs, and multimedia with the knowledge of the hotel management. The original text is changed to different kind of style of media. The arrangement is clear, different kinds of media are put into different places. News come firstly, and then the blog and the multimedia. The invention is that the website uses video, blogs, pictures, and news to teach us how a hotel works instead of scholarly articles. It creates new ideas of teaching hotel management. The delieveryway is photos, news and videos. It attracts people more than using text. They style is fun and educational. The website gives audience a new way of thinking about the hospitality management. The target audience would be the students who are major in hospitality management and the people who pay close attention to the field of hospitality business. The purpose is to teach and tell people something about the hotel in other ways. The different ways could attract audiences more and make the audiences feel more interested about the hotel management. The overall success of its rhetoric is that the sentences in this website is easy to understand and fun. The news are pretty neoteric so that most of the people didn't hear about. Also, it is succeed to attract people's attention since its convenience. Many parts, such as blogs of professionals and latest news are included in the website, people can get most every point they need in this website.
I think the website is successful, people who major in hospitality management can read it and I'm sure you would enjoy it.

The Remix Project
For the remix project, our group decided to take a video about the intenationa students who study in the United States, mainly in MSU.
We chose this theme is because we are a group of Chinese students who came to MSU to study, it's happening on ourselves. Also, this project has somthing to do with my first portfolio. I basically came up with the idea and make it more concrete. Everybody else has his own work to do. It's the first group-working project in this class, we didn't really know how to work it out together. However, after a few times' group meeting, we got many ideas and all we sould do is to put the ideas together and make the video. We have searched much for the project, students who go abroad to study would always know that the imagination and the reality are different. Before we came to the US, all we think about is how to have fun and how to make more American friends, but after we came here, many stuff are different from what we thought. We want to think about this situation more deeply and add that to the video.
Two people in our group know something about how to make a video, but it's still a big challenge for us since no one is very good at it. Doing this project is not only a task to test our literacy or English writing level, but also a test of compositive ability. Every person in the group should have his own talent in one field, so it's time to use the skills and talent that we have. I'm looking forward to see our and other groups' remix projects.
