Something new to me

I have taken the sailing class this semester. Before taking it, I have heard that the class is very interesting and we could experience sailing in this class. In the first class, the professor told us we could only sail in April and May, I'm a little disappointed with that. However, after several seminars, I found it's also fun to learn some knowledge in the classroom.
In the first seminar, I have learned every part of the sail boat, and the model that professor showed us was so cool, I was even more excited about this class. I have made many friends in the first seminal, many of them are like me, it is the first time for us to sail! In the second and third seminar, I have learned how to move about a sail boat safely, the purpose of each item on the boat and how GPS is used and why it's so important for the sailig. The porfessor told us once a student was bored in his vacation and came to the professor, then the professor and some of his friends took the student to sail. They even went to Miami. How exciting the experience is! I felt myself totally love this sport. For me, I am not a person who often do sports or outdoor activities, I would rather stay at home and read books or surf the internet. I think sailing may become one of my favorite sports!
I just can't wait to sail on the Great Lakes in April!

10 questions about my field

1. What's the function of hotels?
2. What is the "hotel industury"?
3. What are the aims for a hotel manager?
4. What would a hotel manager do for those VIP guests?
5. How do authorities rate or rank the hotels?
6. How to create a hotel advertisement?
7. How to choose a location for a new hotel?
8. What are the basic components of hotel products?
9. How many departments are there in a hotel?
10. What work does a hotel manager should do in one day?

I have found a textbook, which is called "Hotel Operatons & Management". It indtroduces hotel management in many ways, and tell readers some basic knowledge about the hotel. I have also found some answers to my questions. The primary function of hotel is to provide accommodation for those away from home, and to supply such people with at least their basic needs. A hotel in a country can -taken together - be looked upon as forming an industry; the "hotel industry". The aims for a hotel manager are to satisfy their guests and to run profitable business. The authorities or trade associations in different countries may "categorise", "classify",or "grade" hotels in different ways and according to different criteria. Star rating systems are commonly devised and used, which might range from "one star" up to "five srar". As for the advertisement, some advertisements for hotel, especially those which are designed to attract holidaymakers, incorporate pictures - usually photographs taken from"advantageous" perspctive and describe the special attractions of the hotel. The book doesn't say much about the location, it just wrote that the most suitable location for hotels depends on the "markets". The basic components of hotel products are sleeping accommodation, food and beverages, and organized functions. The hotel departments according to services are accommodation services, food and beverage services, and suppor services.
As you can see that many of my questions are solved in the textbook, and I really learned a lot from it.

Memoir of a Hotel Manager

I have found an essay which is called "Memoirs: A day in the life of a hotel manager". In the essay, the author uses third-person tone of voice to narrative a day of a hotel manager. The essay is realistic, she uses the sentences like "The hours can vary from day to day and everyday is unpredictable as the next" and "You need to be hands on and available to assist where necessary" to show how busy a hotel manger is. The author also uses personal experience to narrative all the work in a hotel that need to be done by a hotel manager. The revision is that what a hotel manager truly is and how a hotel ran by a hotel manager and other staffs. Since it's not a first-person narration, the author doesn't use any reflective verbs to show her own opinions, but the work flow of the hotel managers that she worte about shows that she know the job well. Obviously, she must have some experience in doing this job. The essay also has the inspiration feature, the sentence like "The job requires you to be muti skilled and have a good knowledge about the departments in the hotel." shows that the high requirements for a hotel manager.
The whole essay tells readers the elementary work for a hotel manager and how important the manager is for the whole hotel. Challenges are everywhere during one day in a hotel for a hotel manager.

New stuff I have learned

I chose economics as my major before I went to college. Actually I changed my mind to major in hospitality management  after I took the first hospitality bussiness class. The professor showed us a video about hotel management, it's so interesting. I found myself truly falling in love with the major.
I have learned many types of business and many important vocabularies for the hospitality management in the second class. Usually I don't like doing homework, but when I did the homework for HB, I think it's easy and so interesting. Then I decided to choose hospitality to be my major, I think I finally know what I am really interested in.
I also learned a lot of other stuff during last week. In writing class, I have learned the elements of narrative. We have watched the movie Star War: A New Hope, the conflict between good and evil is shown obviously in the movie. I think learning the elements of narrative is very helpful for my Literacy Memoir writing. In my lab class, I have learned something about the Red Cedar River, we went under the bridge to do experiments, it was cold, but fun.
I think it's a great start of this semester, everything went well and I hope I could learn more later on.

Hospitality Management and Pop Culture

It seems that pop culture doesn't portray the field of hospitality management much in songs or tv shows. Most of the time, the jobs like doctors or policemen have been portrayed a lot by pop culture. However, there are still some movies, which could be good examples.
One of the movies is called "Pretty Woman", it tells a good story which is a hotel manager helps a prostitute become a lady. Another example is the "Fawlty Towers" series, it's a funny take on the hotel business. It tells a series of stories which happens in the hotel, and how those staff in the hotel deal with the problems.
These two examples show the work that the employees should do in a hotel. The "Pretty Woman" shows that how a staff in the hotel helps others, and the staffs' responsibility. Their devotion to the work is also shown in the examples.
The words with specialized meanings within my field would be:
  Responsibility
  Devotion
  Unremitting
  Experience

About Me

My name is Yiran Chen, I am from China. I chose Hospitality Management as my major, because I have a great interest in managing a hotel or a restaurant. I started writing in a very young age, but I usually wrote in Chinese before high school. After I went to high school in the United States, I began to read a lot in English, and I found it really helps for my writing. I think I am still a pretty weak writer in English writing. My strong point is that I could describe stuff clearly. However, my weakness is that sometimes I couldn't find enough examples to support my essays. Since I am not a native speaker, I would say that the most important thing for me is to enrich my vocabulary. My personal goal is to use this blog to write more, and to get more help for the writing skills from others. Since the major is what I am interested in, I think I could have more stuff to write about it. The blog may be a good place to improve my writing skills.
